Beyond Cavity Filling: Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Strategies for Mastoid Obliteration. A Systematic Review of Clinical and Preclinical Evidence

This project is a systematic review aimed at synthesizing clinical and preclinical evidence on biomaterials used for mastoid obliteration, with particular attention to clinical outcomes, safety, biological integration, and translational potential. A systematic literature search will be conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science according to PRISMA methodology. Clinical studies evaluating biomaterials for mastoid obliteration and preclinical studies investigating biomaterial performance in mastoid or temporal bone reconstruction models will be considered eligible. Data will be extracted on study design, population or experimental model, biomaterial type, surgical approach, clinical outcomes, material-related complications, and biological endpoints. Methodological quality will be assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools, adapted for preclinical evidence. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of current evidence and to identify gaps for future research.
