What is known about palliative and end-of-life care for adults with vascular disease in community settings: Scoping review

Abstract Background. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are progressive, life-limiting vascular conditions with mortality comparable to advanced cancer. Despite a high symptom burden, palliative care is poorly integrated into vascular pathways, and the role of community-based palliative provision is not well described. Aim. To map the existing literature on palliative and end-of-life care provision for adults with advanced PAD or AAA, with particular attention to community and primary care settings, the integration of palliative input across the disease trajectory, and patient, family and clinician perspectives. Methods. A scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O’Malley framework, with enhancements proposed by Levac et al., and reported in line with PRISMA-ScR. Six bibliographic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane) were searched alongside grey literature sources. Records were independently screened against a priori eligibility criteria; data were charted using a standardised proforma and synthesised narratively.
