Designing Sustainable Smart Wearables: A Human-centered Framework Integrating Ergonomic and Aesthetic Principles

Abstract : This paper discusses the factors that encourage wearable adoption such as aesthetics, comfort, customization, cost and usability. Wearables are now multi-functional lifestyle products that incorporate human technology, ergonomics and how an individual lives his/her daily life. The market volume of wearables in its evolution is quickly increasing, yet user adoption and acceptance are volatile due to little consideration for human experience, comfort and desirability. A mixed-method approach was carried out wherein primary data was obtained from a structured survey of sixty-five users representing different age, lifestyles, and occupations, and secondary data was obtained from research on ergonomics and human-computer interaction. The samples included six categories of wearables, namely smartwatches, fitness bands, smart glasses, rings, clothing, and hearables. An investigation of comfort, aesthetics, ease of use, and cost parameters was conducted. The results depicted three main predictors for adoption and longer-term use-aesthetics by 72%, comfort by 68%, and usability by 81%. Young users go by style and fitting. Older users like it if a device is comfortable and has an intuitive interface. Affordability guided purchase intent among students and homemakers. This underlined the need for designs being cost-effective. The study presents a human-centered sustainable design framework based on strategies such as empathy, ergonomics, and inclusivity in personalization. Emotional appeal and comfort are required to embrace technology for sustainable, responsible, and feasible products and experiences. The framework can be applied in practice by designers and engineers hoping to innovate through the user's lens, considering the development of smart wearables that are meaningful, responsive, and sustainable.
