(1) The three essential elements of shared decision-making are recognizing the need for a decision, understanding the best available evidence, and incorporating patients’ values and preferences. (2) Limb-threatening high-energy lower extremity trauma (HELET) is a case of clinical equipoise, that is, when there is genuine uncertainty as to which treatment will result in the better outcome. As such, patient preferences often determine the treatment option. (3) Decision aids (eg, videos, booklets) are tools to help facilitate the shared decision-making process. (4) Best case/worst case/most likely case is a scenario planning approach that focuses on the potential stories of different treatment pathways, rather than focusing on making a treatment decision.
