Alternative Digital Secondary Education for Marginalized, Out-of-School Youth in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review of Intervention Models, Outcomes, and Implementation Challenges

This project conducts a scoping review to systematically map the fragmented evidence on digital alternative education for one of the most pressing yet overlooked challenges in global education: re-engaging marginalized youth who have left school in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is currently no comprehensive synthesis that maps alternative digital secondary education models specifically targeting marginalized, out-of-school adolescents and youth, including the populations reached, delivery modalities, reported outcomes, and implementation challenges. This gap limits the ability of policymakers, practitioners, and researchers to design evidence-informed programs and investments. This scoping review aims to address this gap by systematically mapping the existing evidence on alternative digital secondary education for marginalized youth who have dropped out of school. Objectives The primary objective of this scoping review is to systematically map the available evidence on digital interventions aimed at promoting school re-engagement among marginalized youth in LMICs. Specific research questions include: • What types of digital interventions are currently employed to facilitate school re-engagement of marginalized youth in LMICs? • What are the characteristics of marginalized youth targeted by these interventions in LMICs (age, gender, socioeconomic status, reasons for dropping out)? • What are the reported outcomes (academic, social, emotional, vocational) of these digital interventions for school re-engagement in LMICs? • What are the perceived enabling factors and barriers to the implementation and effectiveness of these digital interventions in LMICs? • How do these interventions address issues of digital equity, access, and digital literacy among marginalized youth in LMICs? • What are the ethical considerations and digital rights implications discussed in relation to these interventions in LMICs?
