Types, Method, and Mode of Implementation of Pain Maps in Musculoskeletal Pain Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review

Pain maps are tools used for assessing the extent, location, or distribution of pain either for clinical or research purposes. Pain mapping involves a transformational representation that typically requires a respondent to indicate the regions of the body affected by pain and may include additional information such as qualitative or intensity aspects of the pain. Musculoskeletal pain does not only determine the years lived with disability, it is a leading cause of impairment worldwide. The burden from musculoskeletal pain is predicted to increase globally especially in low- and middle-income countries due to population growth, aging, and increasing risk factors for other musculoskeletal conditions, such as obesity, injury, and a sedentary lifestyle. Yet the procedures, designs, and instructions on how to perform and interpret pain drawing or mapping in MSK pain research and practice differ across studies and settings thereby eclipsing its viability. This study is primarily aimed at exploring literature on musculoskeletal pain to map evidence on the most commonly used types of pain maps categorized across five distinct features: scalablility, region-specificity, aspect or orientation, segmentation, and gender identification; as well as unearthing how the different pain concepts are evaluated and reported using the different methods and modes of implementation. This will result in a narrative synthesis following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
