SURFACE WATER QUALITY MONITORING IN THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA FROM 2018 TO 2024

Water, as one of the basic mediums of the environment, is necessary for the survival of all living beings, but it still copes with a lot of pressure which affects its available volume and quality. Consequently, numerous laws, directives and policies have been enacted in order to preserve and improve this important resource. One of the most important directives that regulates the quality of surface water in Europe is the Water Framework Directive. The plans of this directive are focused on continuous monitoring, which includes collecting, analyzing, measuring, quality evaluation, documenting and spreading information about the state of the environment, with the aim of protecting water to meet the needs of modern and future generations. Monitoring water quality is a very significant activity in the management of water resources. This paper depicts the assessment of water quality in Serbia, which is in accordance with the Serbian legal system, using the Serbian Water Quality Index method. The analysis of water quality for the period from 2018 to 2024 has shown that the watercourses of the Danube and the Sava have a satisfactory quality, while the quality of the watercourses that discharge into the Sava, Danube and Great Morava in the territory of Belgrade is significantly worse than the water receiver tanks themselves. The goal of this research is to present the significance of water quality monitoring, which could be used for the implementation of water sector reforms until 2030, in order to achieve the necessary water management standards at the various levels (local, regional and national) and to fulfill water management goals.
