Le résumé fourni par la source
James Fitzsimons was a scientific giant, a revered colleague and a charismatic leader. He discovered the physiological basis of thirst and sodium appetite, and the neural control for their perception. His work provided a conceptual shift by showing that peptides are not just hormones in the blood but can act as signalling molecules that can act directly in the brain to regulate behaviour and physiology, fundamentally changing our understanding of neuroscience. He was an inspirational lecturer in the Physiological Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, where he taught in undergraduate medicine and natural sciences courses. He also played an active and prominent role at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, and was a significant presence in the Physiological Society for several decades. He served on the society's committee and was editor for the Journal of Physiology.
