Nodes Acquisitions PS-waves Added Value: Impact of PS-stacks on Elastic Inversion for a Brazilian Pre-Salt Reservoir

Summary In recent years, the acquisition of Nodes data has become the standard method for imaging pre-salt reservoirs in Brazil. This technology provides not only PP but also PS (converted wave) data, but processing these data is costly and complex. We developed a pilot project for processing PS wave data from Nodes that cover one of the Brazilian Pre-salt fields. Despite the difficulties, the results of this project demonstrated that it is possible to obtain a PS image of the reservoirs of reasonable quality, presenting compatibility with the PP image. However, could this PS data, even with limited quality, still bring benefits in a joint inversion? The focus of this work is to answer this question, comparing results of an inversion of PP only data and a joint PP-PS inversion (where both data are inverted simultaneously). The results of the joint PP-PS inversion present higher resolution, greater lateral continuity and better match with the well logs when compared to the results of an elastic inversion of the PP data alone. The potential gain of using these data in elastic inversion is evident, even in a context of PS data with reasonable quality.
