Almost 40 years ago, Gayatri Spivak proposed the concept of “epistemic violence” as the key to revealing the structure of asymmetrical power between Victorian England and its colonized periphery. This line of thinking about cognitive injustice between the center and the periphery has also been addressed by Latin American intellectuals. This paper reviews the propositions about the epistemic violence in order to arrive at a provisional conceptualization, without attempting to exhaust all theoretical possibilities, given the magnitude of the subject, and analyzes its manifestations in literature, taking as an example the collection of short stories El informe de Brodie by Jorge Luis Borges.
