Hello readers, I am back again with the second issue of The Biochemist in 2026!Vaccines remain one of the most powerful and paradigm-shifting inventions of the modern scientific era. From the complete decimation of smallpox to the improved understanding and control of diseases such as measles, polio, and influenza, vaccination has radically redefined global public health. Beyond protecting individuals, vaccines affirm community pliancy through herd immunity, safeguarding the vulnerable groups and those to whom vaccination does not reach due to multiple socio-economic reasons. In an increasingly interconnected and mutally dependent world, their role transcends the requirement to develop a critical line of defence against imminent and re-emerging threats. This became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where timely delivery became a critical survival factor.However, despite their worldwide triumph, vaccines face a complex range of challenges. Vaccine hesitancy, fueled by misinformation and doubt, continues to threaten public health benefits. Inequities in access persist across and within nations, aggravated by logistical boundaries, economic disparities, and frangible healthcare systems. Meanwhile, scientific challenges, such as rapidly mutating pathogens, cold-chain requirements, and the need for expandable manufacturing, necessitate ongoing innovation. Addressing these concerns requires not only scientific breakthroughs but also compassionate engagement at the societal, cultural, and political dimensions.This issue of The Biochemist explores these cross-dimensional challenges through diverse viewpoints. We feature an insightful article by Daniel Jolley, Lee Shepherd, and Anna Maughan, who examine why vaccine misinformation persists, focusing on the emotional and psychological foundations of hesitancy. Their work highlights that combating misinformation is not solely a matter of correcting facts but also of understanding human behavior and trust.Building on this, Sara Cordeiro presents a scientist’s perspective on vaccine hesitancy, delving into its underlying causes while also highlighting promising advancements. From needle-free delivery systems to more patient-friendly and portable vaccine technologies, these innovations offer hope for improving both accessibility and acceptance.This issue also features an article from Damian Álvarez-Paggi and Salvador Ventura which explores the promise of precision immunology for vaccinating against some of the most challenging biomedical hurdles, neurodegenerative diseases.The issue then broadens its lens to consider the wider ecosystem in which bioscience operates. Alessandro Siani provides a timely discussion on how geopolitical pressures, funding constraints, rising tuition costs, and operational challenges are reshaping teaching and learning in the biosciences. These factors not only influence research output but also the training of the next generation of scientists—those who will carry forward the work of addressing global health challenges.We also turn our attention to the future workforce through Zayna Alam’s exploration of industrial training opportunities for students. As the boundaries between academia and industry continue to blur, such experiences are increasingly crucial in equipping young scientists with practical skills and perspectives.Further enriching this issue are reflections from grant awardees who have attended conferences and visited research laboratories. Their experiences underscore the importance of collaboration, exposure, and intellectual exchange in advancing scientific discovery and innovation.Finally, we present a forward-looking discussion on the evolving strategies and vision of the Biochemical Society in 2026. As the scientific and societal mural continues to change, the Society’s commitment to supporting researchers, fostering inclusivity, and promoting excellence remains primary.Together, the contributions in this issue highlight that while vaccines are rooted in biomedical research, their impact and the hurdles they cross extend far beyond the experimental bench. Acknowledging and working on these bottlenecks will require not only scientific ingenuity but also collaboration, effective communication, and a shared commitment to the global well-being.
