Generative AI and the Future of GIScience Education

Initially perceived as a potential adversary, generative AI has the capacity to benefit both educators and students when utilized properly. This technology is gaining momentum not only in geographic research but also in GIScience education. This chapter introduces generative AI and examines its implications for the future of GIScience education. It advocates for enhancing students’ AI literacy by teaching the fundamentals of generative AI, including prompt engineering, a skill that will be essential for their future careers. The chapter provides a curated list of task-specific AI solutions customized to increase productivity and inspire students. Additionally, the chapter explores the challenges and risks associated with generative AI in education, particularly issues such as academic dishonesty and AI-generated hallucinations. The chapter concludes by discussing future opportunities, focusing on what and how we should teach generative AI in GIScience courses, and how the technology can support students in learning GIScience programming techniques.
