Abstract Detecting localized overheating defects in power cables is crucial for power operation and maintenance. However, existing cable inspection methods cannot identify such issues before faults occur. By analyzing the broadband impedance spectrum of cables, this approach detects changes in distributed parameters caused by locally overheated sections and localized defects. Utilizing the FT algorithm based on the Kaiser window function and logarithmic amplification, the method achieves precise localization of these overheated segments. Experimental results demonstrate that this technology accurately pinpoints locally overheated cable sections online, significantly enhancing the reliable operation of urban power transmission and distribution networks.
