Large scale maps of tree canopy cover percentage on agricultural lands in Europe and the Sahel (30m, circa 2020)

This dataset provides a tree canopy cover percentage map on agricultural lands across Europe and the Sahel region, contributing to the characterization of agroforestry extent at a continental scale. The maps were produced by combining data from multiple sources: A 1-m resolution tree canopy height map (Tolan et al 2024) The 10m ESRI Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) product (annual maps, 2017–2023) (Karra et al 2021) A 100m Terrestrial Human Footprint map (Gassert et al 2023) Two types of aggregated raster layers are included in this dataset: Trees on Croplands (TOC) - TOC_Europe.tif and TOC_Sahel.tif: tree canopy cover percentage on land classified as croplands. Trees on Pasture (TOP)- TOP_Europe.tif and TOP_Sahel.tif: tree canopy cover percentage on land classified as pasture (rangelands /grasslands under human management). Pixel values range from 1 to 100 (canopy cover percentage) on agricultural lands with tree cover, while treeless croplands and pasturelands have a value of 0. The reference period is circa 2020. Spatial aggregation was performed in the Google Earth Engine computational environment, over a sinusoidal equal-area projection grid (SR-ORG:6974) to get a map with approximately equal-area pixels of ≃ 900 m².
