ABSTRACT Tundish shrouds (SEN/MT/SES) play a critical role in steelmaking by transporting liquid steel to the mold. The bore and ports of the nozzles influence the resulting flow patterns both within the nozzles and further in the mold. Understanding the influence of the design features helps design the nozzles appropriate to the needs of the caster. When designed incorrectly, the nozzles can lead to sub-optimal flow and temperature distribution within the mold. Undesirable flow patterns can lead to quality defects in steel such as longitudinal and transverse cracks as well as slivers. The effect of some of the various design features of the nozzles and their influence on the flow patterns are presented.
