Statistical representativeness of the microstructure and surface topography in steel reference samples in a dynamic compression test

This study evaluates the qualification of steel reference specimens for dynamic compression tests using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). Three structural steels—S235, S460, and S690—were examined before and after loading. The analysis included computed tomography, 3D optical profilometry, light optical microscopy, and optical emission spectroscopy. The specimens were prepared using electrical discharge machining to minimize thermal and mechanical effects on the surface layer. Computed tomography (CT) analysis confirmed high internal homogeneity and negligible porosity in the initial state. After loading, no macroscopic cracking was observed. Local defects were detected in selected S235 specimens. Surface topography was mainly influenced by EDM-related surface orientation rather than steel grade. This workflow can be used to qualify reference specimens and may help define future acceptance criteria for SHPB specimen preparation.
