Mobile healthcare (mHealth) systems have been rapidly developed for remote patient monitoring and healthcare data management. However, most existing solutions are based on centralized cloud infrastructures, which lead to problems such as high maintenance costs, limited scalability, and large risks to data security and privacy. To address these issues, this work proposes a blockchain-based framework for secure and decentralized management of mHealth data. It integrates mobile computing and blockchain technology, utilizing Ethereum for secure data transactions and smart contract execution, and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) for distributed storage of large healthcare files. The front-end is a mobile application interface for patients, healthcare providers, and institutions to securely access and exchange health-critical data. We used a smart contract deployed on the ethereum test network to implement and evaluate the system. Experimental results show good performance in terms of low response times (10–41 ms), low CPU utilization (1.5%–2.5%) and efficient energy consumption measured in terms of gas consumption. The proposed solution solves the problems of data integrity, transparency and security and eliminates the single point of failure. Hence, the proposed solution is a scalable and efficient alternative to the traditional centralized mHealth systems.
