Platooning control of connected automated vehicles under communication constraints: advances and challenges

Platooning control (PC), as the core component of intelligent transportation systems (ITSs), enables multiple vehicles to travel closely through coordinated control, enhancing traffic efficiency, fuel economy and road safety. However, the performance and stability of vehicle platoons (VPs) depend on the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, which is often constrained by various factors, including packet loss, time delays, quantization and even cyber-attacks. These communication constraints seriously affect the string stability and safety of VPs, posing significant challenges to the design of robust and scalable platoon controllers. From the perspective of control engineering, this review systematically expounds the latest research results in the field of PC under communication constraints. The fundamental components of the PC, including vehicle dynamics, spacing policies, information flow topologies and the control objectives of the VPs, are first proposed. Then, a systematic study is then conducted on the latest development of PC from the aspects of non-ideal communication constraints, communication scheduling and cyber-attacks. The focus is on discussing their mathematical modelling, the impact on the performance of the VP and their specific manifestations in PC. Finally, several potential future research topics are presented.
