Creativity in Innovative Qualitative Methods

In this chapter of Innovative Qualitative Methods for Criminology: An Introduction to Dissertation Research , the value and opportunities granted by using innovative qualitative methods for crime-focused dissertation research are explored through ‘research by reading’, ‘research by looking’ and ‘research by experience’. These clusters of innovative qualitative methods seek to reveal not only the benefits of adopting a creative approach to students but also what it offers to dissertation supervisors who may not be confident in guiding supervisees through projects using methods they are not familiar with. In closing, a reflection is made upon the contribution of creativity through the incorporation of innovative qualitative methods to dissertation research to not only students and academics but ultimately the field of criminology itself. Criminology, with its inter- and multi-disciplinary roots, is ripe for creativity, but for this to occur, it needs criminologists to be trained in innovative qualitative methods.
