The spectrogram is a 3-D visualization of sound with time as the X-axis, frequency as the Y-axis, and intensity as the Z-axis. It was developed at Bell Telephone Laboratories just before and during World War II and made public shortly after the conclusion of the war [Potter, 1946]. One of the early goals for the sound spectrograph was to create a reading machine for the blind—while this goal was not achieved the research into doing this opened our eyes to the complexity of speech. Today, the spectrogram is an essential tool for visualizing time-frequency patterns in speech communication research, among many other fields, and it is widely used in research on time-varying patterns in speech production and speech perception. The history of the spectrogram [Fulop, 2011; Koenig et al., 1946] and its many uses can help us to better understand its role in speech research and what insights future developments may bring. In this presentation, we will provide some of the highlights in the development of this essential tool for speech research.
