Knowledge at Risk: How Location Shapes Information and knowledge Protection in Australian SMEs

This paper explores how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Australia adopt knowledge, information and cyber security practices, focusing on how geographic location influences their choice of protection strategies. Using an interpretivist approach and case study methodology, six Australian SMEs across three sectors - real estate, professional services, and retail were examined through semi-structured interviews. Based on empirical findings from these 6 SMEs across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, the study highlights that SMEs primarily rely on informal and semi-formal mechanisms such as restricted access, password protection, and trustworthy relationships. While awareness of information and knowledge protection has increased post-COVID-19, financial limitations, owner experience, and the nature of local markets continue to shape their practices. The paper concludes that regional SMEs often face greater barriers due to limited infrastructure and IT support, emphasizing the need for location-sensitive cybersecurity training and policy interventions.
