Flame-Retardant Properties of Lignocellulosic Composites
Le résumé fourni par la source
The chapter focuses on the flame retardancy of lignocellulosic composites mainly with respect to lignin as it is naturally found in a variety of cellulosic substrates, and its high carbon content and excellent charring characteristics attract to assess its prospects. The thermal properties of the lignin vary according to sources and structures, causing intense char formation at high temperatures and good flame-retardancy insulations. Lignin, over past years, has attracted considerable attention as a potential alternative to halogenated flame retardants considering the cognitive health and environmental issues of traditional substances. The chapter covers pure form of lignin, the lignin-based composite structure, chemically modified, and nanomaterial as well in a quest for fulfilling industrial flame-retardance requirements. It highlights essential factors quantifiable as peak heat release rate (pHRR), and reduction% of pHRR to identify combustion capabilities and listed for evaluation using standardized testing methods such as cone calorimetry, pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry (PCFC), UL 94, and the limiting oxygen index test. Non-flammable flame-retardant (FR) composites can be used for construction, and interior decoration, as well as for various fields such as railway engineering and shipbuilding. The chapter ends with future horizons on the integration of heteroatoms, metal ion immobilization, and nano-sized forms of lignin to improve the efficiency of lignin, for enhancing char yield simultaneously decreasing pHRR, and increasing thermal stability behavior when introduced into polymer composites.
