Always ready to learn: understanding the learning biographies of expert academy football coaches

For over three decades, sport coaching scholars have critiqued formal coach learning. Coaches are widely understood to place greater value on informal and non-formal learning. Despite this, coach education experiences have remained the focal point of investigation. Located in a wider research project investigating coaching expertise, this study examined the learning biographies of expert coaches working in Premier League category one academies. Involving a co-produced approach between Dublin City University, the Insight SFI Research Centre and the Premier League, this study aimed to identify a sample of coaches with significant expertise in football academy coaching, understood as skilled adaptation to complexity. We implemented a multi-stage recruitment process using peer nomination from all category one academies. Subsequently, a total of 18 coaches, from the Foundation Phase (Under 8–12), Youth Development Phase (Under 13–16) and Professional Development Phase (Under 18–21), participated in semi-structured interviews. Learning biographies were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and subsequent member reflections to identify the learning experiences perceived to be most impactful by coaches. Generated themes suggested that coaches: (a) developed critical reflection as a habit of mind, (b) held clear intentions and purpose for their coaching, (c) sought and used others to contribute to their learning, and (d) their learning was shaped through experience. We suggest that coach development should be more deliberately oriented towards coaches’ workplace experience, supporting learning through both salient and mundane episodes of practice by cultivating reflective capacity.
