Pre-operative Skeletal Muscle Assessment and Clinical Outcomes in Adults Undergoing Heart Transplantation: A Scoping Review

This scoping review aims to map the existing literature on the assessment of pre-transplant skeletal muscle mass and clinical outcomes in adults undergoing heart transplantation. Specifically, it will identify the methodologies applied in the quantative assessment of pre-operative skeletal muscle mass, how low skeletal muscle mass is been defined in this population (including reported cut-off values), as well as describe the major findings related to pre-operative skeletal muscle mass and post-transplantation or waitlist outcomes. The review will systematically search and screen for relevant studies and extract data on study characteristics, skeletal muscle assessment methods, and reported clinical outcomes in relation to pre-operative skeletal muscle mass. Findings will be synthesised to map patterns in measurement approaches and outcome reporting across the literature. The review is expected to provide a comprehensive overview of current approaches to skeletal muscle assessment in this population, identify areas of variability, examine the clinical outcomes reported in relation to skeletal muscle mass, including the direction of reported associations, and highlight key knowledge gaps to inform future research.
