AI scribe for clinical documentation in Latin America: A scoping review protocol

This scoping review maps the existing evidence on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) scribe tools for automated clinical documentation in electronic health records (EHRs) in Latin American health settings. Background: AI scribe tools — software systems using natural language processing (NLP), automatic speech recognition (ASR), and large language models (LLMs) to automate clinical note generation — have rapidly emerged as one of the fastest-growing innovations in health informatics. Whether this growing evidence base addresses Latin American health systems remains unknown. Objective: To map existing evidence on AI scribe tools for clinical documentation in EHRs in Latin American settings, characterize technologies and outcomes studied, and identify research gaps. Methods: Scoping review following JBI methodology (Peters et al., 2020), reported per PRISMA-ScR (Tricco et al., 2018). Systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, BVS/LILACS, and Cochrane Library (2015-2025). Protocol-first approach; search conducted April 26, 2026. Expected outcomes: Characterization of available evidence, geographic and thematic evidence mapping, and identification of research priorities for Latin America. Registration date: April 26, 2026.
