Résumé fourni par la source

This research project aims to systematically investigate the burden and determinants of chronic kidney disease (CKD) across Africa through a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis. CKD has emerged as a major global public health concern, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide and contributing significantly to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. In Africa, the burden of CKD is increasing rapidly, driven by a combination of traditional non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors and unique region-specific exposures. The primary purpose of this study is to synthesize existing evidence on risk factors of CKD in African populations, with particular attention to identifying both conventional factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity and non-traditional contributors including infectious diseases, environmental exposures, and socio-economic determinants. By consolidating fragmented data, this research seeks to provide a clearer understanding of CKD epidemiology in Africa and inform targeted interventions. Research Objectives The project is guided by the following objectives: 1. To estimate the prevalence of CKD in African populations By pooling data from multiple studies, this research will provide a more accurate and regionally representative estimate of CKD prevalence across the continent. 2. To identify and quantify major risk factors The study will evaluate the strength of association between CKD and both traditional (e.g., hypertension, diabetes) and non-traditional risk factors (e.g., infectious diseases, environmental toxins, occupational exposures). 3. To explore regional and demographic variations Differences in CKD burden and risk factors across subregions, age groups, and rural versus urban populations will be analyzed. 4. To assess gaps in current research The project will highlight areas where data are limited or inconsistent, guiding future research priorities.
