Translating Body-mind Harmony in The Analects for Modern Well-being: An Eco-translatology Approach

In the context of the global mental health crisis, Oriental wisdom, particularly the Confucian concept of “Body-Mind Harmony”, offers a unique paradigm for holistic well-being. However, previous studies have tended to focus on macro-theoretical interpretations and strategic approaches in Confucian classics, while paying insufficient attention to the transformation of health concepts in translation. Therefore, this paper employs Eco-translatology as a theoretical framework to analyze D.C. Lau’s English translation of The Analects. By examining the “Three-dimensional Transformations”, including linguistic, cultural, and communicative, it explores how the ecological balance of the original text is adapted to the Western target language environment. Research indicates that Lau employs selective adaptation to bridge ancient Chinese health philosophy with contemporary psychological constructs. By transforming traditional ethical virtues into blueprints for psychological resilience, Lau’s translation facilitates effective cross-cultural health communication. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how the translation of classical texts serves as a vital bridge, facilitating the transmission of Confucian health wisdom within modern global wellness discourse.
