Production and Comprehension of Past and Future Reference in Agrammatic Aphasia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Individuals with Agrammatic Aphasia (IwAA) have been consistently found to face problems with temporal/time reference, with several studies providing evidence for a selective impairment in past reference in IwAA. It has been suggested that past reference is more demanding than present reference or future reference, because, unlike present/future reference, past reference involves discourse linking, which is cognitively costly (Bastiaanse et al., 2011). However, some recent studies have found that past and future reference are comparably affected in IwAA. The primary aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis is to address whether past reference and future reference are differentially affected in IwAA.
