To sum up, this book focuses on the human, psychological, and relational dimensions of undertaking a PhD, rather than on disciplinary research methods or technical aspects of doctoral work. Central to the book is an exploration of emotions, identity, motivation, confidence-building, and resilience required during doctoral study. It does not provide instruction on conducting literature reviews, data analysis, or specific research methodologies – there are other reference works available which focus more on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the work. Instead, this book addresses the often underexplored experiences that shape doctoral success and well-being. Foregrounding the psychology of doing a PhD is not accidental – after all, the author is a psychologist! And a psychologist specialising on discrimination, interethnic relations, and structural barriers based on group membership, for that matter. The focus on inclusivity and broadening access for those who have traditionally been excluded from higher study is therefore no accident. This book, then, intends to support current and prospective PhD students by drawing on my decade-long experience in student supervision and highlighting both pathways to greater inclusivity and the importance of human processes and relationships on the road to PhD success. By demystifying the doctoral journey, the book aims to support students to achieve a more inclusive and humane doctoral experience.
