2017 CALYPSO - Coherent Lagrangian Pathways from the Surface Ocean to Interior

The IRENE experiment was led by the Spanish Research Council (CSIS) and The Balearic Islands Coastal Observing and Forecasting System (SOCIB) in collaboration with colleagues from The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Field operations were conducted from the Research Vessel SOCIB in the Alboran Sea in July 2017. Operations aimed to measure several aspects of the Almería-Orán front between Atlantic and Mediterranean Water using a multi-platform approach: thermosalinograph at surface, VM-ADCP, underway CTD, two gliders, drifters, and a surface buoy with subsurface ADCP to infer vertical velocity in the context of the frontal physics.
