The global push for sustainable, cost-effective, and resilient infrastructure makes Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) essential across civil, aerospace, marine, and defense sectors. Basalt fiber composites (BFCs) are emerging as strong contenders for multifunctional SHM (MSHM) systems due to their excellent mechanical properties, superior corrosion resistance, high thermal stability, and environmentally friendly origins. Unlike conventional glass or carbon fibers, basalt offers a desirable balance of mechanical strength, lower cost, and environmental friendliness, enabling it to serve as both a structural material and a sensor. This chapter discusses the use of BF composite applications in MSHM systems. Special attention is given to sensing integration processes, including electrical, optical, and acoustic methods, followed by an extensive discussion of applications in civil infrastructure, aerospace, marine, automotive, and energy. Case studies have demonstrated the use of BFCs in functional SHM systems, with an analysis of benefits, limitations, and future research opportunities guiding the path forward. The discussion highlights the potential for BFCs to support durable and long-term structural resilience, help achieve sustainable development goals, and contribute to the development of smart, self-aware infrastructure for the future.
