The Sophie Sugar Addiction Scale: Conceptualisation, Development and Validation
Résumé fourni par la source
Despite growing evidence for food addiction, sugar addiction remains underexplored. This study developed and validated the Sophie Sugar Addiction Scale (SSAS), a psychometric tool assessing sugar addiction as a distinct behavioural addiction. Based on Griffiths’ (2005) components model, an initial 18-item scale covering six dimensions (salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, relapse) was administered to 1,017 adults (M_age = 28.7, SD = 8.8; 41% female). Confirmatory Factor Analysis led to a refined six-item version, which demonstrated high internal consistency (α = .87, Ω = .86) and strong convergent validity with the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0. The SSAS also showed meaningful associations with ADHD, OCD, depression, anxiety, and stress. Notably, 28.9% of participants met criteria for sugar addiction without meeting food addiction thresholds, supporting its uniqueness. The SSAS provides a reliable, valid tool for identifying sugar addictive behaviours in research and clinical contexts.
