This chapter discusses the concept of societies as complex systems, emphasising the importance of heterogeneity, interaction, non-linearity, and emergence. It introduces the idea of agent-based modelling, a computational methodology that allows researchers to create, analyse, and experiment with models composed of agents that interact within an environment. The chapter will introduce some classic models, such as the Schelling model, a Game Theory model, the Sugarscape model, and an Opinion Dynamics model, to illustrate how agent-based models can display complex behaviours and answer fundamental questions about social systems.
