Practical and computational investigations into metronidazole benzoate drug as an environmental inhibitor of copper corrosion in alkaline solution

Metronidazole benzoate, MB, has been studied as a copper corrosion inhibitor in a 0.5 M NaOH solution owing to its reasonable price and availability. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, open circuit potential, and potentiodynamic polarization were employed to examine metronidazole benzoate’s inhibitory impacts. The findings indicated that 0.9082 mM of MB impeded the corrosion of copper in the examined alkaline environment, achieving maximum inhibition efficiency of 84.87%. Our findings indicated that the MB is predominantly a cathodic inhibitor. Copper metal’s surface morphology was likewise examined utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The inhibitor’s attachment to the electrode surface was confirmed by using UV-visible spectrophotometry. It forecasts the complex’s structure that results from the interaction of Cu(II) with MB. Additionally, the effectiveness of metronidazole benzoate in preventing copper corrosion in an alkaline environment was examined in this research utilizing Monte Carlo (MC) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations.
