Routes of Emigration: A View from Contemporary South Asia

Summary Out-migrations of people have become a crucial marker of modern South Asia. Scholarship on South Asian migration and mobilities has illuminated the complex processes that have ingrained emigration in the political landscapes and social imaginaries of the region. While reductive causal analyses have been the driving analytical register within migration studies traditionally, scholarly attention to South Asia demonstrates how the material conditions that structure routes of emigration must be understood as relationally produced with the cultural and affective logics underlying people’s practices of moving away from their places of origin and building lives across different kinds of borders. Framing emigration through the relational linkages between the political-economic and the sociocultural reveals how the formation of contemporary South Asia occurs through the geographies and contestations of empire, postcoloniality, and racial capitalism, but in ways that are entangled in the everyday politics and practices of kinship ties, community-making and identity formation, social hierarchies, and desiring better life chances. Such analytical insights not only provide a richer understanding of the place of and interconnections between migrant labor systems, bordering practices, and violence in the making of South Asia, they also deepen the work of migration studies more broadly and contribute immensely to the global conversation on the relationship between the state, capital, territory, and the movement of people across borders.
