Exploring the Antioxidant and Therapeutic Effects of Neem and Ginger Against Paracetamol-Induced Hepatotoxicity: A Rat Modelling

Strengthening the health care system using medicinal plants is a suitable option to minimize chronic disorders. Liver diseases are posing a serious threat to human health associated with the abusive use of allopathy medicines, especially in developing economies. The current research aims to evaluate Zingiber officinale and Azadirachta indica for their hepatoprotective role. For this purpose, 20 Sprague Dawley rats were equally divided into four groups, i.e., negative control, paracetamol positive control, 2.5% ginger, and 2% neem powder, respectively. During the 42-day study, the levels of bilirubin and liver enzymes were significantly elevated due to liver damage. Although, the values dropped (20-25%) in the treatment group. The AST, ALT, and ALP reduced to (152.90±8.92 UL˗1), (72.62±5.70 UL˗1) and (347.51±25.17 UL˗1) in neem and ginger supplementation, respectively. Serum glucose and serum lipid profile increased in the positive control group but reduced (5-10%) in both ginger and neem groups. The serum protein profile declined in the liver damage group but improved (~5%) in the treatment groups. The hematological parameters slightly decreased in the liver damage group but increased in the ginger and neem groups. Moreover, the white blood cell differential count and renal parameters showed abnormal values in the liver damage group but improved after treatment. This promising study highlighted the hepatoprotective role of neem and ginger, which may open several avenues of research.
