Supporting Supervisors with the PLUS Framework: Adapting for Cultural Sensitivity

Introduction: Supervision plays a critical role in shaping the learning experiences of students. The Professional Learning through Useful Support (PLUS) Framework, developed in the United Kingdom, serves as a guiding tool for supervisors to enhance their practice. However, the universality of this framework across different cultural contexts remains uncertain. Addressing this gap is vital to ensure that advice provided to supervisors is effective and culturally sensitive.Objectives: This study examined the applicability of the PLUS Framework in Singapore, focussing on its relevance in a non-UK educational context and identifying potential modifications to improve its effectiveness.Method: In this qualitative study, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 14 supervisors and subsequently analysed using template analysis.Results: The PLUS Framework heightened supervisors' awareness of their techniques and provided guidance in their supervisory actions. Additionally, the framework empowered supervisors to employ a variety of strategies and served as a catalyst for enhancing the overall support provided to them. However, implementing the concept of ‘safe failure’ was challenging due to cultural perceptions of success, highlighting the need for cultural adaptation.Conclusion: While the PLUS Framework improved supervisor communication and encouraged a deliberate approach to student supervision, its effective use in different cultural contexts may require adjustments to the language and delivery of supervisory advice. Tailored educational opportunities and ongoing support are some potential avenues for successfully adapting the framework and enhancing supervisory skills across diverse settings.
