BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can erode social and occupational functioning. Grit-the perseverance and passion toward goals-has been linked to favorable life outcomes. We examined whether grit statistically accounted for the association between adult ADHD tendencies and monthly income. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 2321 adults in Japan. ADHD tendencies were assessed with the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS; Inattention and Hyperactivity). Grit was measured with the 12-item Japanese Grit Scale (Perseverance of Effort, Consistency of Interest). Self-reported monthly income indexed economic success. Standardized multiple regression and indirect-effect models tested the associations; a parallel model evaluated the grit subcomponents simultaneously. RESULTS: The total ADHD score was inversely related to grit (β = -0.049, p < .001) but not to income (β = -0.002, p = .868). Hyperactivity associated lower income (β = -0.015, p = .016), whereas Inattention did not (β = 0.001, p = .881). Indirect-effect analyses indicated a significant indirect association via grit (p < .001), whereas the residual direct association between ADHD tendencies and income was not significant (p = .847). In the parallel model, the pathway was driven by Perseverance of Effort (p < .001), while Consistency of Interest was not significant (p = .231). CONCLUSIONS: Grit-specifically perseverance of effort-emerged as a key component of the ADHD-earnings association pattern, with a weak direct association. Because grit is cultivatable, interventions that strengthen sustained effort may mitigate economic disadvantage among adults with ADHD tendencies and represent a pragmatic target for functional improvement.
