The relationship between the cardiac cycle and multisensory integration among older adults

Afferent signals from baroreceptors (baroafferent signal) are increased during cardiac systole than diastole (Garfinkel & Critchley, 2016). A recent study found that reaction times to auditory-visual bimodal stimuli were prolonged when the stimuli were presented at the cardiac systole than diastole, suggesting that the cardiac cycle modulates multisensory integration (Saltafossi et al., 2023). Given the age-related declines in the function of baroreceptors (Kaufmann et al., 2020), the effect of cardiac cycle on multisensory integration may be weaker in older adults than in younger adults. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate this possibility.
