For 5G wireless communication applications, a novel nonuniformly spaced heterogeneous subarrayed (NSHS) array architecture and associated synthesis method are proposed. This technology is capable of achieving satisfactory scan angle coverages in cases of saving radio frequency (RF) channels, while eliminating the need for lossy amplitude attenuators. Different from conventional subarray structures, heteroge-neous subarrays feature the optimized feeding phases inside subarrays, and they are arranged with the nonuniform subarray spacing in vertical plane. These characteristics enable NSHS arrays, consisting of multiple heterogeneous subarrays, to further release degrees of freedom and break the periodicity in arrays, which aid in suppressing sidelobes for scanned patterns of NSHS arrays with equal excitation amplitudes at subarray-level. Additionally, due to two sets of nonlinear variables (i.e., aperiodic subarray positions and interior feeding phases of subarrays) involved in the NSHS array synthesis problem, a two-stage iterative convex optimization method is developed to address this nonlinear optimization issue. Two examples of synthesizing linear and planar NSHS arrays are presented to verify the effectiveness and scalability of proposed method. Compared to other subarray technologies, linear NSHS arrays using lowly lossy feeding networks achieve larger scan angles from 3.4 to 3.8 GHz. The planar NSHS arrays can achieve a scan range of ±60° in horizontal plane while ensuring effective scan ranges in vertical plane.
