The Use of Value Propositions in DevOps Software Product Management

Software product management involves overseeing a product throughout its lifecycle to maximise business value. However, with the multitude of choices available, identifying valuable future development options and determining how to pursue them can be challenging. This process requires input from multiple stakeholders, adding to the complexity of the task. Effective communication is essential, especially within a DevOps framework, as it relies on collaboration and information sharing among practitioners in various roles to create value. This article aims to provide a deeper understanding of the collaborative elements involved in value estimation within DevOps environments. Thematic analysis was employed to investigate data from two previous studies as part of a research inquiry. The analysis identified 12 value propositions across five dimensions, which were employed in three stages. The results emphasise the importance of continuous requirements management, especially concerning product request intake and reducing overhead associated with value-driven activities in customer-focused DevOps environments. Moreover, promoting a shared understanding of value and its flow among stakeholders can lead to better decision-making in product management.
