[EN] The Pyrenean desman is a small semi-aquatic mammal endemic to the headwaters of mountain rivers in the north and center of the Iberian Peninsula. It is considered as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List, as its populations have decreased drastically in recent decades, probably due to the alteration of the river flow regime. In order to address this problem, we have studied the temporal changes in the presence of desman in rivers with and without hydraulic regulation. We analyzed fecal samples with two different techniques and goals, microsatellites to determine the genetic structure of the species, and DNA metabarcoding to study its diet. A significant correlation has been obtained between the presence of dams and the decrease in desman populations. Regarding the diet, the species presents a certain selectivity in its prey, predominantly aquatic. Genetic analysis has identified two genetic clusters in the Catalan Pyrenees with very low genetic diversity, whose separation may have been caused by the construction of the Torrassa reservoir.
