Abstract Cancer and its treatment have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, their families, and caregivers, wherever they live in the world. As many as 45% of cancer patients and survivors experience high levels of cancer-related distress and may develop more serious psychological problems such as adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. These conditions impact negatively on clinical outcomes such as treatment compliance, survival, and quality of life, and require specialized psychosocial care. Psychosocial problems also affect the patient’s family with a resultant increase in the emotional distress among the patient’s caregivers, that may continue if the disease progresses into palliative care and the bereavement period with greater risk of complicated or traumatic grief among relatives. Patients’ and their family’s psychosocial needs must be a central component of quality comprehensive cancer care. However, this presents greater challenges for low- and middle-income contexts at the individual/family, clinical, and country levels. This chapter attends to critical and timely patient, survivor, and family psycho-oncology care needs and strategies with important practice and policy impacts.
