During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK (February/March 2020) key questions regarding the possibility of reinfection and the durability of immunity following SARS-CoV-2 infection remained unanswered. Recognizing the importance of this information for the pandemic response [1], funding was provided by the UK Health Security agency (UKHSA), the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), and contributions from the governments of Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales to set up a study to provide these answers. Our aim was to establish a prospective cohort study, across the UK, to follow participants over time with regular testing as the pandemic unfolded. Healthcare workers (HCWs) were chosen as study participants due to (i) their high exposure to SARS-CoV-2 infection in the first wave, making them an opportune population on which to study the reinfection risk; (ii) the relative ease in conducting research, including recruiting participants and undertaking blood sampling in a hospital environment, and (iii) their perceived interest in supporting the pandemic through research. Therefore, the SARS-CoV-2 Immunity and Reinfection EvaluatioN (SIREN) study was established in April/May 2020, with the first participants recruited on 18 June 2020 and the last participant recruited on 31 March 2021.
