The concept of single-electron transfer (SET) has been widely employed to rationalize the generation and complexation of radical species, facilitating a wealth of efficient synthetic strategies with high atom economy. However, precisely locating a SET transition state has been and continues to be the holy grail of radical chemistry, and the electron transfer pictures during the SET process have not been captured in both theory and experiment by now. Herein, we proposed and confirmed a new mechanistic model named relayed single electron transfer (relayed-SET) for diradical generation/complexation, and located the relayed-SET transition state in case studies by performing quantum mechanical calculations for the first time. Further control experiments have shown that the reaction indeed undergo a SET process discovered through theoretical calculations, revealing the feasibility of designing free radical reactions based on the relayed-SET model. The calculated results indicate the orbital overlap is necessary for relayed-SET, yet the process is not accompanied by intermolecular bond formation or breaking. Analysis of π-electron number in key structures provides direct evidence that the SET process involves a single π-electron transfer. This work helps deepen the understanding of the nature for radical chemistry and combines experiments with theories demonstration that SET reactions is an electron transfer process via orbital overlap.
