The Land Earth System Terrestrial Model (LESTM) is a process-explicit, spatially distributed land surface framework developed to represent the co-evolution of hydrological, geomorphic, and biogeochemical processes within the Earth's Critical Zone. The model is designed to resolve the vertically and laterally coupled pathways through which water, sediment, and elements are redistributed across heterogeneous terrain. In contrast to traditional soil-column-based land surface models, LESTM adopts a mass-conserving architecture that explicitly represents lateral transport processes alongside vertical exchanges. This structure enables dynamic coupling among runoff generation, erosion, weathering, and elemental cycling, thereby allowing landscape evolution and biogeochemical fluxes to co-evolve within a unified modeling framework.
