Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Higher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Systematic Literature Review

This systematic literature review aims to identify, analyse, and synthesise published research on artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa between 2015 and 2025. The review addresses five research questions covering: (1) AI technologies and tools adopted, (2) key drivers of adoption, (3) key barriers and challenges, (4) theoretical frameworks applied, and (5) research gaps and future directions. The review follows Kitchenham (2007) SLR guidelines and PRISMA reporting standards.
