Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are envisioned to play a pivotal role in next-generation wireless systems, where the associated channel matrix is often highly ill-conditioned. To mitigate the potential performance degradation caused by such ill-conditioned channel matrices, in this paper, we propose a novel channel bidiagonalization decomposition (CBD)-based transceiver design for MIMO with bit-interleaved coded modulation (MIMO-BICM) systems. Specifically, we propose an optimization framework, that facilitates the joint design of precoder and post-processor for maximizing the mutual information (MI) with finite-alphabet inputs. In particular, we reveal that the desired precoder and post-processor exhibit distinctively different structures with respect to the operating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), where the equivalent channel condition number (ECCN) serves as an effective indicator for characterizing overall achievable rate performance. This insight motivates us to further propose a complexity-scalable transceiver design that leverages the subchannel-pairing and Givens rotation, guided by a well-approximated closed-form performance metric for the achievable rates. Numerical results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme in terms of achievable rate and bit error rate (BER), outperforming other state-of-the-art designs across various modulation and coding schemes (MCSs).
