The use of a biodegradable caprolactone nanofibers in the surgical treatment of a recurrent incisional hernia
Résumé fourni par la source
The incisional hernia is the most common post-operative complication and the most common reason for a re-operation in general. Despite all the effort spent to develop new techniques and materials for its repair, the number of recurrences remains unchanged and some call it a "surgery of failure". Surgical mesh has brought a "tension-free" principle but also a lifelong risk for a potential complication for those who received it. Nanofiber scaffolds mimic the structure of the extracellular matrix which proves to be one of the key parameters in materials biocompatibility. Polycaprolactone is biodegradable, hydrophilic polymer suitable for adhesion and proliferation of tissue cultures. By changing the conditions and concentrations during the electrospinning procedure, its mechanical and structural properties can be modified. Also different molecules can be incorporated in its fibres later released during the fibre degradation. In the experiment a polycarprolactone nanofibers alone or enriched with growth factors and a composite material with polypropylene mesh were used. After testing our hypothesis in vitro, an animal study was conducted as a prove of the concept. In vitro adhesion, viability and proliferation of fibroblasts on each sample was studied. In vivo a histological examination folowed an extensive...
