Public Perception and Consumer Attitudes Toward GMOs
Résumé fourni par la source
Public perception and consumer attitudes toward genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are shaped by a complex interplay of scientific understanding, cultural values, ethical considerations, and trust in institutions. This chapter delves into the multifaceted dynamics influencing public responses to GMOs, highlighting the significant variability across regions, socioeconomic classes, and demographic groups. While scientific consensus safety and benefits of GMOs, public skepticism remains persistent due to perceived risks, lack of transparency, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. This chapter begins by tracing the historical development of GMO-related controversies and the emergence of anti-GMO activism. It then explores the influence of media portrayals, misinformation campaigns, and social media narratives in shaping consumer beliefs. Labeling practices, legal frameworks, and regulatory inconsistencies are analyzed for their impact on consumer choice and market dynamics. Special attention is given to cultural and ethical perspectives, including religious viewpoints, that affect GMO acceptance in different societies. Case studies from both developed and developing nations illustrate divergent patterns in GMO adoption and public engagement. This chapter also reviews the effectiveness of communication strategies employed by scientists, governments, and biotech companies to address public concerns. Finally, it proposes a pathway toward building public trust through transparent policymaking, inclusive dialogue, and science-based education. Recognizing the importance of consumer perception in shaping the future of agricultural biotechnology, this chapter emphasizes the need for a holistic and empathetic approach to communication and policy development.
